Matrix Effect

To create this Matrix effect, you'll need some high tech looking text, or code. Open up a jpg with notepad. Techno huh? This is just what we're looking for.

text

Select parts of the code from notepad and copy and paste onto a 500 x 400 white canvas. This is the most crucial part of this graphic. Use different font sizes and spacing between characters to get a rainfall effect. (example...paste some text using a font size of 8, another part with a smaller or larger font using different character spacing, etc.) Here is the pattern I came up with (size is reduced).

text pattern

Once you've made your pattern you might want to save the original pattern as a .UFO. Merge the text as a single object. Fill it with a color green #008800. Fill the background with black. Merge All. Select All and convert to object. Name this layer "text". Hide it for now.

You should have something similar to the screenshot shown below (screenshot is reduced).

Matrix Effect

To the base image apply Motion Blur/Camera Shake with Moving Offset at 20, Angle 100.  Select and show the text layer.  Change the merge mode to Luminosity Only and set the transparency to 60.   Apply Creative Particle/Smoke with the following settings: Density:33 Size:70 Variance: 70 Opacity:63 XScale:75 YScale:58 Variance: 20.  Merge All.

Matrix Effect

Use Tonal Adjustment (retouch tools), with the preset Highlight, in Mode, and vertically brush up over areas of the text.   Click off Mode and change the merge mode to overlay.  Continue doing this until you are satisfied with the contrast.

Using the Paintbrush, black, small size (8 or so) set the transparency to 50-65 and vertically paint out to define your pattern more to give the allusion of a rainfall effect See the image below at full size.

Use the Dodge and Sharpen Tools to bring out some of the smaller and larger text in various areas if needed.

You may want to change the hue.   Go to Hue & Saturation/Colorize.  I set the Hue at -22.

Add text and use Neon from the Easy Palette.  I'm using the Matrix font which can be found here.  I highlighed a few more areas at this point using Tonal Adjustment and/or dodge tool.
