To make quick needlepoint, you'll need the free Screenworks filter from Cybia.  To learn how to import plug ins, click here.

Making A Background Tile

Open up a new canvas 100 x 100 and fill it with an orange color RGB:  215, 84, 23.

Go to Effects, Screenworks, and apply Dot Screen.   Go back to Screenworks and apply Close Knit.

You now have your needlepoint background tile as shown here.

To retain the colors, save your needlepoint in .gif format.  If you prefer to save it as a .jpg, when saving as optimized, in the Subsampling box put in None to retain the colors otherwise you'll get a very dark black effect.

When choosing other colors for this background tutorial, you'll need to choose pretty vibrant colors for it to work without coming out looking too black.  By going to Format, Brightness & Contrast, you can lighten the tile up to get the desired effect you want.

Needlepoint Effects On A Picture

example picture

You need a picture with very bright colors, otherwise you'll get very dark results with this filter.  You can right click and save this picture to follow this easy tutorial.

Following the same steps as above, go to Effects, Screenworks, and click on Dot Screen.  Return to Screenworks and click on Close Knit.

You'll need to lighten it up.  Go to Format, Brightness & Contrast and click on the top third box three times.   Return to Format, Tone Map.  Use the following values:  Highlight 15, Midtone 15, Shadow -30 and click ok.

More Effects

For a "rug" effect you can use these values in Screenworks:  Dense Net and Close Knit.  Then under Format you can play with Brightness & Contrast, and the Tone Map to lighten it up.  You can add on a little fringe as shown here.  To learn how to create a rug, see our Oriental Rug Tutorial.

Another Technique:

Open up your image in Photo Impact.   Right click on the image and click copy.  Right click again and click paste.  This will put a copy of your image exactly over the original.

Use Screenworks Dense Net and Close Knit.

Right click and go to Properties.  Set the transparency to 50%.  Hit the spacebar to deselect the image.  If your image is still too dark, brighten the original as noted above.   Below is a sample of the rug using this technique.
